Can Ohio prisons force inmates work (ie kitchen duty)?

My boyfriend is doing time in Richland Correctional and has been assigned to kitchen duty. It seems like a violation of rights to force him to work. To those that are going to make irrelevant comments on how prisoners shouldn't have rights, do not bother. I am only looking for articulate, pertinent answers. Thank you!!
