Why is Rick Ross (the rapper) popular?

I mean, we all know he used to be a correctional officer. Now, all of a sudden he says he's slanging yayo? On top of that, does he really have to steal Freeway Ricky Ross' name and then pretend that he's him? What is this guy's appeal? "Maybach Music"? Seriously?
