What are the pros and cons of being a correctional officer?

I really want to be a youth correctional officer. I know that it can be dangerous. But am wanting to know all the benefits and risks that comes with this profession. If anyone has had some experience and would share that'd be great. Also, where are the best places in the US for these specific jobs? I was wondering that if I was pretty good at karate, and am willing to get even better, if that would strengthen my chances of being hired into more seniority. Also, if this doesn't work out I am thinking about being a secretary. And was wondering if degrees are needed or something special like that for being one. thanks
