Wrong zip code will it be sent to right zip?

My husband is in a Correctional Facility and realized he had been putting wrong zip code on his daughters letters.He hasn't received any of those back. Will post office correct and send to right zip? Also when he sent last letter to right zip it was sent back forward attempt return go sender, what could that mean?
